Crossing Over: Evolutionary Girl’s Club South East Asia Tour 2007 is The Evolutionary Girls Club’s first appearance in South East Asia, bringing its progressive philosophy and social awareness to Malaysia through art. The EGC is an international group of artists, scholars and activists who deal with issues around voice, access and privilege though the making and exhibiting of art. Their voices concerning human rights through artistic expression have been heard in many different places in the world, and resonating to the voices coming out from those places as well. The group has done art exhibitions and workshops in Ukraine, Germany, the United States, Sweden, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Japan, Finland and more since 2001.

The exhibition “Crossing Over” is curated especially for The Evolutionary Girls Club South East Asia Tour 2007 to Malaysia and Singapore. It is the very act of bringing over the artwork and ideas from the other side of the world (most participating artists are from the West) to the Malaysian and Singaporean audience that is physically “crossing over” the boundary of regions. “Crossing Over” includes the idea (and the reality) of change, movement, travel, communication, connection, transition, flux, transcendence, diversity, tolerance, understanding and possibility. We take this as a step to cross the borders of country, language, culture, race, sex and gender. Metaphysically, we attempt to cross the border of our own preconception, limitation, judgement and prejudice. What is the reality of this very process of crossing over, and what happens after you cross to the other side? Will you change your old attitude? Will the reality itself change completely? We hope the exhibition will engage the audience and other artists to contemplate on related issues surrounding the society, art, culture, politics and humanity in general.

In this group exhibition, there will be a video screening, performances (featuring Pamela S. Booker from the “Evolutionary Girl’s Club” and local performers such as Aziz Ali, Azmyl Yunor, Estrella, Jerome Kugan and Nyoba Kan) and a visual art exhibition of video installations, photography, digital prints and paintings. The EGC will also be given a gallery talk at The Annexe Galleries and New Era College.
